The people who give, are giving more. But that number has reduced.
In many ways, people are more charitable than ever before. The data shows that people who do give, are giving more. And for charities who have embraced a digital strategy, the returns are even higher with non-profits in the UK and US seeing a 32% increase in online revenues during 2020.
However, overall the number who give is declining. With the UK’s cost of living crisis compounded with global social and economic turbulence, will people continue to be as generous? The combination of a global pandemic, rising inflation and the threat of a recession plus the cost of living crisis could dampen charities’ financial outlooks. An estimated 2.2 million givers intend to cut back the amount they donate post-pandemic, while around 1.6 million have already had to cancel a direct debit to charity, according to a study by the Covid-19 Support Fund. It is critical that charities understand – why are people giving less? And more importantly, how can it be prevented?
